Santiago Huerta is a professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid in Spain. He has worked both on research and in consulting on masonry arches (or vaults) in all types of structures. He will talk about the basic structural concept of the masonry arch as elaborated by Heyman, the major advantages of masonry work in general and what to do when you find cracks in masonry.

Stone Arch Bridges are gaining importance in Tanzania with about 200 structures completed in the past 4 years and another 200 planned to be completed by the end of 2024.

Time has proven the technology’s strength and it’s cost benefits (up to 80% savings!) are appealing to road agencies. Today it’s lower carbon footprint (up to 75% avoided carbon emissions!) is an important added benefit in the fight against climate change.
